Arm Circles

Big, round circles to oil the shoulders.

Sweep both arms in wide circles — forward, up, back, and down — like drawing suns beside you.

How to do it

  1. Extend both arms out in front at shoulder height.
  2. Sweep them upward and back in a full circle, brushing past your ears.
  3. Keep the circles wide and unhurried, shoulders low.
  4. Reverse direction halfway through the counts.

Breathing: Inhale as the arms rise, exhale as they fall.

Questions

My shoulders click — should I stop?

Painless clicking is common and usually harmless. Make the circles smaller and slower; stop only if you feel actual pain.

Why circles in both directions?

Forward circles open the chest; backward circles counter it. Balanced joints were a design principle of the 1951 routine and remain one here.

Radio Taiso is gentle, but it is still exercise. If you have a medical condition, an injury, or any doubt, check with a health professional before starting.
